The Law

Synopsis

The art of legislative deal-making becomes riveting political drama in this true story of French Health Minister Simone Veil's groundbreaking struggle to legalize abortion. Veil, a lawyer and politician, survived the Holocaust to emerge as a champion of women's rights. Appointed health minister in 1974, she faces opposition in pushing landmark legislation to decriminalize abortion. Anti-abortion activists launch a craven campaign of personal and anti-Semitic attacks. As Veil navigates the religious and moral minefields, events are chronicled by a crusading photo-journalist who is waging her own feminist fight for recognition.
