Remember Baghdad
Synopsis
Remember Baghdad reveals the forgotten story of Iraq's once flourishing Jewish population, and the country's disintegration from a thriving melting pot to a war-torn danger zone. At the dawn of the 20th century, Iraq was a booming, diverse country where Jews, Muslims and Christians coexisted in peace. With the founding of Israel in 1948, upheaval followed, as Iraqi Jews—once part of the elite—were persecuted and driven out, the exodus culminating with Saddam Hussein's rise to power. These displaced Iraqi Jews share their moving accounts of a utopia that was lost to violence and intolerance.
Panel discussion to follow, led by
Abraham Sofaer with special guests Jamil Ezra and Aaron Matityahu.
