Rita Jahan Foruz

Opening Night Special Event

Date passed

On Opening Night we will welcome Rita Jahan Foruz, Israel's most famous female singer. Iranian-born, Rita, as she is universally known, moved to Israel as a child and has lived there ever since. In 2008 she was voted Israel's all-time number one female singer. As the "Wall Street Journal" noted, "Iran and Israel Can Agree on this: Rita Jahan Foruz Totally Rocks." The evening will feature the documentary "Rita Jahan Foruz." Rita will discuss her extraordinary career, take questions from the audience, and possibly offer a song or two. A dessert reception and opportunity to meet Rita will follow.

Rita Jahan Foruz immigrated to Israel from Iran with her family when she was eight years old. On the eve of her forty-ninth birthday, with enormous tension between Tehran and Jerusalem looming in the background, she records her first album in Farsi. As she prepares her album for release, we discover an intimate family portrait. They share a deep longing for their country of birth, which is no longer accessible to them, and for their extended family now scattered around the world. Even Rita could never have imagined a grander ending to this intimate journey, but one year later, at age fifty, she receives an official invitation to perform at the United Nations in New York. The warm response she receives from her Iranian fans proves what is often forgotten: countries are made up of individuals, and there is nothing like music to bring them together.
