Standing Up
Come meet the producers, the director, Jonathan Miller, and the three aspiring comedians featured in the film: David Finklestein, who risks expulsion from his ultra-Orthodox Jewish community with every performance; Sara Parks, who moved to New York to become a star, but is barely scraping by; and Raafat Toss, a successful lawyer bored with his career and now finally ready to follow his passion.
Discussion and Q & A with special guests to follow.
Synopsis
Filmmaker Jonathan Miller follows an Orthodox Jew, a personal injury lawyer and a janitor as they risk everything for a chance at the spotlight. These unlikely aspiring comedians have their love of comedy tested again and again as they find their voices in the cut-throat New York stand-up scene. They each must ultimately decide how far they're willing to go—and what they're willing to sacrifice—for a laugh. A moving and, at times, hilarious documentary about the power of comedy to transform the lives of three very different people chasing the same dream.
